Suggestions for Budgeting Success

Deviating from your personal budget can be a slippery slope to financial demise. However, if you are aware of possible pitfalls, you can protect yourself from making detrimental budgeting mistakes. Be mindful of the following temptations and mistakes to maintain your successful personal budget:

  1. Impatience. A variety of problems can arise while implementing a personal budget. However, one of the greatest deviations from the plan involves impatience. Whether the financial results are not quick enough, or you just can’t wait to purchase a new car, impatience can knock your budget off track. A little patience will serve you well as you continue to reduce spending and increase savings.
  2. Vacations. Many people remember to include a vacation when building their personal budget, but often forget the inflationary differences between home and the tourist trap of choice. Frequently, tourist find that their vacation destination offers great food and entertainment, but at much higher prices. A little bit of research will help you build an accurate budget for your next trip.
  3. Gift Giving Months. Unfortunately, gift giving months such as holidays and heavy birthday months are easy to overlook when building a budget. Not only do you have to structure your finances around the gifts, but also the travel and food associated with these occasions. To alleviate the financial stresses that come with birthdays and holidays, factor in these expenses and save for them throughout the entire year.
  4. Credit Cards. If credit cards are your downfall, it’s best not to carry any. The temptation of paying with plastic can cause a great deal of trouble with your budget. Aim to pay with cash or check. If you choose to keep a credit card for emergencies, be sure to keep it out of reach.
  5. Lack of adjustments. Your budget is a structure based on income and expenses. If one of these dollar amounts should change, you need to remember to make the corresponding adjustment to your budget. Failure to do so can alter your budget and possibly produce major deficits.
  6. Emergencies. Sure, you budgeted to save for emergencies, but nothing ever happens, right? Wrong. There is truth in the saying “when it rains, it pours.” So when you have to fly home for Grandma’s funeral, and the dog gets sick while you are gone, will you be able to pay for both the vet and the unexpected trip? When you think of emergencies, generally medical emergencies come to mind. However, don’t forget about deaths, veterinarian expenses, dental costs, and lost wages for such unexpected events.

With all the advantages a personal budget can provide, it is worth the time and effort to persevere through tough times. Being prepared for temptations, obligations, and unexpected events will help you implement a successful personal budget to achieve your financial goals.
