North Lake Tahoe Lender
A Guide to Local Activities by Your North Lake Tahoe Lender

Living in North Lake Tahoe offers a wealth of activities, but there are still just 24 hours in a day. While we juggle the demands of work and family, it can be exhausting just getting through the week. By the time the weekend rolls around, we are ready to spend some quality time with the ones we love. But once you have gone to the beach, visited Grandma, and re-watched your home movie collection, what else is there to do? Here are some family-oriented and cost-effective suggestions that everyone will enjoy!

Visit the Library
The library may bring back memories of reports and school projects, but it can be a place of adventure and exploration. Check with your local library for age appropriate programs for your children. Whether it’s a preschooler puppet show or story telling for third graders, your library will probably offer a little something for everyone. While you are helping your child pick out a book, why not find some reading material for yourself? If you are cramped on time, look up some books on tape. For an evening activity, check out your library’s movie collection. Most likely, your library will have a website that posts hours of operation, a calendar of events, as well as a search engine of books, tapes, and videos.

Local Event Listings
The events section of your local newspaper is a good place to look for weekend events suitable for the whole family. Frequently, there are free musical concerts, holiday parades, and sport outings sponsored by community clubs. In addition, most museums will offer special exhibits and children’s programs that will be advertised in the newspaper. Generally, you can also find your regional newspaper online.

Pretend to be a Tourist
It’s easy to wait until visitors come from out of town before we even think about what makes our area unique. However, a quick visit to your local chamber of commerce or visitors’ bureau website will reveal a wealth of local history and landmarks. Further, a ranger at the closest state or National park, or National forest can direct you to endless trails and tons of wildlife identification in the Lake Tahoe region. So strap on your camera bag and grab a map—be a tourist in your own town!

Animal Attraction
A trip to the local zoo can be a fun activity for everyone. You can extend the experience by looking up your child’s favorite animal online. Find out where it lives, when it sleeps, and what it eats. Your zoo may even have a live webcam so you can see what the animals are doing after you leave the park. If there is not a zoo close enough to your home, see if you can visit the pets at your local animal shelter. Generally a donation of dog food or a bag of kitty litter will suffice as your “entry fee.”

If you have discovered an activity that your family enjoys, please take a moment and tell me about it!
