NORTH LAKE TAHOE REAL ESTATE AND WILDLIFE
Bear Awareness and Property Owner Responsibilities
Whether you are visiting Incline Village, or you are a North Lake Tahoe Real Estate owner, you know that you are in bear country. Nevada is home to approximately 200 bears, the majority of which live in the mountainous region of North Lake Tahoe. In fact, Nevada has the second highest density of black bears in North America. Visitors and locals alike have a responsibility to protect the bears in the area.
Black bears in North Lake Tahoe can come in a variety of colors other than black, such as brown, blonde, or even reddish color. The males can grow as tall as four feet at 450 pounds. Females are a little smaller at three and a half feet and 350 pounds. Black bears can live 30 years or more, but their mortality rate as a cub is approximately 50%. Black bears are generally afraid of humans and are rarely known to attack.
Most bear/human contact stems from food. Common sense would imply that you should never approach a bear or attempt to feed it, but unfortunately humans still have to be reminded of this simple act of safety. Some other suggestions for safety and bear protection in North Lake Tahoe include:
· Remove all accessible sources of human food.
· Feed pets indoors.
· Clean barbeque grills after use.
· Use temporary or removable bird feeders.
· Store all garbage in a bear-proof container.
Living in or visiting bear country offers some amazing opportunities to view wildlife. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to educate yourself and your family about bears, how to protect them, and how to stay safe. If you have a bear story, I would love to hear it!
